Easter Egg Roll 2012

Politico.com

The Obama family welcomed thousands of parents and children to the White House on Monday for the annual Easter Egg Roll.

The president, flanked on the South Portico balcony by a costumed Easter Bunny, his wife Michelle and daughters Malia and Sasha, wished everyone a happy Easter.

“We are so thrilled that all of you could join us today,” he said. “My job is very simple, it is to introduce the powerhouse of the White House.”

First Lady Michelle Obama responded with, “Thank you, honey.”

“My job is simple as well,” she said, adding her own words of welcome and a caution for her husband about competing in an egg roll. “I think the president is going to try and beat a three-year-old, which I hope he does not.”

The first family descended to the South Lawn, along with family dog Bo and Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson.

The president and first lady cheered on participants in an egg-roll race, took pictures with guests and made their way to a story-telling stage, where the Obama daughters made rare public remarks in a reading of a children’s book, “A Sick Day for Amos McGee," written by Phillip C. Stead.
The president followed them with a reading of “Where the Wild Things Are,” by Maurice Sendak, eliciting howls at one point from Bo, when he encouraged guests to make animal noises along with his reading. “I love this book,” he said.

The event featured live performances on several stages. Characters from Sesame Street, including Elmo, entertained crowds at the Rock ‘n’ Egg Roll Stage. A chef conducted cooking demonstrations at the Play With Your Food station. And celebrities including Julianne Moore were scheduled to participate in book readings at the Storytime Stage.

Malia loves Parks and Recreation

(Politico)

Actor Aziz Ansari was quite pleased when President Barack Obama mentioned him at a fundraiser last week.

In remarks made at a campaign event in New York on Thursday, Obama said that having Ansari in attendance was notable because his 13-year-old daughter loves his show.

“Now, this is big because Malia is a big ‘Parks and Recreation’ fan. So having Aziz here is like the only thing she thinks is worth me doing,” the president joked.

Happy Martin Luther King Day!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King's birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, though the act predated the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by 15 years.
King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

Malia and Sasha's mom will have a Cookbook soon!

First Laday, Michelle Obama's first cookbook, American Grown: How the White House Kitchen Garden Inspires Families, Schools, and Communities will go on sale nationwide on April 10, 2012. The book will tell the story of the White House kitchen garden, and also focuses on healthy, affordable food for families and communities across America. American Grown aims to provide ideas and resources for communities to create gardens, support farmers' markets and make small lifestyle changes to achieve positive health results.

Mrs. Obama will describe how her daughters Sasha and Malia were catalysts for change in her own family's eating behavior, which inspired Mrs. Obama to plant an edible garden on the South Lawn -- the first since Eleanor Roosevelt's "Victory Garden" planted during World War II.

Malia and Sasha - Kardashians

President Obama told Jay Leno he doesn't want his daughters watching Keeping Up With the Kardashians or other (so-called) reality television shows.
As for daughters Malia and Sasha, Obama said all their television time is restricted to the weekends -- just like their cellphone usage.
"Malia got a cellphone, but they're not allowed to use it during the week. just like they are not allowed to watch TV during the week," Obama said. "During the weekends, they get their TV time."

In an interview with iVillage, the first lady said this:
Barack really thinks some of the Kardashians -- when they watch that stuff -- he doesn't like that as much," the First Lady told iVillage. "But I sort of feel like if we're talking about it, and I'm more concerned with how they take it in -- what did you learn when you watched that? And if they're learning the right lessons, like, that was crazy, then I'm like, okay.
